Creating a Startup I & II - Information for MBA Students

In Autumn 2011, there will be two sections of STRAMGT 356: Tu/Th at 8:00-9:45 a.m. and Tu/Th at 10:00-11:45 a.m.

Acceptance to the Autumn course STRAMGT 356 is by application only.

For MBA students only: The application process is closed and students notified of the admission decision.

For Non-GSB Stanford Graduate Students: course information and application process.

 

Below is summary information about the courses:

Objective: Learn about and practice the creation of a startup. 

Structure:  Two-course sequence, potentially followed by an independent study project. 

What:

Autumn Quarter:  Learn about business models, market research, design thinking, opportunity analysis and team dynamics; identify a viable opportunity, form a team and start iterating on the business model – product – market.

Winter Quarter: Learn about operational staging, hiring, financing, term sheets, go-to-market strategies; work with your Silicon Valley mentor to get the startup off the ground.

Spring Quarter: Possible independent study with your mentor or instructor.

Who:

Students: MBA and other Stanford graduate students (Sloan, engineering, medical school, etc.).

Instructors: Stanford Professors, serial Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and venture capitalists/superangels, and a board of mentors from diverse industries.

How:   

Autumn Quarter:  About 60% classes and experiential learning; about 40% work on your idea within a single vertical.

Winter Quarter:  About 20% classes; 80% work with your mentor and instructor on your team’s startup.

Information Sessions: Friday, May 13, Noon – 1 PM at M109 (GSB) and Wednesday, May 18, 4-4:30 PM in Huang 10 (Enginering)

Admission:

All students will apply individually for the Autumn quarter.  If you already have a business idea, that’s OK, but it’s not required – idea generation and opportunity identification will take place within the course. 

Application deadlines: The application period is closed for MBA students for enrollment in the Autumn 2011 course.
