Greg Penner is a founder of Madrone Capital Partners, based in Menlo Park, California. Madrone is a private investment firm affiliated with S. Robson Walton and other family members. The firm invests directly both in companies and in other funds. Investments on the direct side span venture capital, private equity, and public equities, with a focus on alternative energy technologies and China. All investments are made with a concentrated, long-term approach.

Prior to founding Madrone, Mr. Penner was the senior VP and CFO of Wal-Mart Japan and the senior VP of finance and strategy for Walmart.com. Previously, he was a general partner at Peninsula Capital, an early stage venture capital fund. Early in his career he worked in strategic planning at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and corporate finance at Goldman, Sachs & Co.

Mr. Penner received an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1997 and a BS in international economics from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in 1992.

He is a director of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Baidu Inc., and Teach For America.
