Connie L. Matsui

Connie Matsui is executive vice president, knowledge and innovation networks, at Biogen Idec Inc., one of the largest companies in the biotech industry. Prior to the merger of Biogen Inc. and IDEC Pharmaceuticals Corporation in November 2004, she was a senior vice president with IDEC from 2000 to 2003, vice president from 1994 to 2000, and senior director from 1992 to 1994. Biogen Idec discovers, develops, and commercializes innovative therapies for oncology, rheumatology, neurology, and immunology indications.

Before joining the biotech industry, Ms. Matsui was in commercial banking. Her last position was vice president and manager of employee relations and communications at Wells Fargo Bank. Ms. Matsui started at Wells Fargo as a retail banking trainee in 1977 and went on to fill various positions in the retail, marketing, retirement programs, and personnel divisions until 1991.

In 1999, Ms. Matsui was elected the national president and board chair of the Girl Scouts of the USA. She led the 3.4-million member organization for three years. She is currently an ex-officio member of the Girl Scouts' national board and an honorary associate of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. In 2001, the United Nations Association of the USA Council of Organizations selected her as an International Year of the Volunteer honoree. Ms. Matsui was named to the Stanford Alumni Hall of Fame in 2005 by the Asian American Activities Center.

Ms. Matsui received a BA from Stanford University in 1975 and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1977. Ms. Matsui has been married to GSB classmate Bill Beckman for 27 years, and they have two children.
