Isaac Stein

President

Isaac Stein is the president of Waverley Associates, Inc., a private investment firm. He is also a trustee of Stanford University and a director of the James Irvine Foundation

Mr. Stein received a BA in mathematical economics from Colgate University in 1968. He graduated from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Stanford Law School in 1972. Mr. Stein was a partner at the San Francisco law firm of Heller, Ehrman, White & McAuliffe until 1979; he specialized in corporate and securities matters. From 1979 to 1983, he was vice president, secretary and treasurer of Raychem Corporation, where he served as both CFO and general counsel. In 1983, he formed Waverley Associates. From 1990 to 1992, he served as chairman of Esprit de Corp and from 1991 to 1992 was its acting CEO. During 1993, Mr. Stein served as special assistant to the president of Stanford University.

Mr. Stein previously served as chairman of the board of trustees of Stanford University and was chairman of both Stanford Health Services and UCSF/Stanford Health Care. He also has served as a director of Stanford Management Company since 2000; a director of Stanford University Hospital since 1988, where he served as chair of its finance committee from 1991 to 1009; and as a member of the national advisory board to the Haas Center for Public Service since 1992. Mr. Stein is a member of the Stanford Humanities and Sciences Council and the Interdisciplinary Biosciences Advisory Council. He has been a two-term member of the Stanford Law School Board of Visitors.

He was a founding member of the board of directors of the Entrepreneurs Foundation and is a member of the international advisory council of the Economic Development Board of Singapore. He also serves as chairman of Maxygen, Inc.; a director of Alexza Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a director of the American Balanced Fund, Inc. and The Income Fund of America, Inc. (both affiliated with The Capital Group); and a director of several privately held corporations. Mr. Stein previously served as a director of a number of public companies, including ALZA Corporation, Symyx Technologies, American Century Group of mutual funds, CV Therapeutics, Inc., Raychem Corporation, Micro Mask, Inc. and Up-Right, Inc.

Mr. Stein is married and the father of two children. He and his wife, Madeline, reside in Atherton, California.
