Company Case Study Release Form

There are three strategies for obtaining permission from company representatives for use of their information and commentary in a case.

  1. You can write the case with the consent and cooperation of the company and specific individual(s). When you first meet with the primary representative from the company, explain that they will have an opportunity to review and comment on the final draft and that they will be asked for their consent to release the case into the classroom. You may want to give them a copy of the Company Case Study Release at the outset of the process. When you are at the final draft stage, send the company the final draft and the release form and ask for their consent and signature.

  2. You may be writing an overview case and plan to combine information from representatives from several companies. If you do not plan on asking for their consent to release the case, you must tell them so. Prior to interviewing company representatives, tell them not to share anything proprietary or confidential with you and that, although you will send them the case as a courtesy, you will not be asking for their consent to release the information in the case.

  3. If your case will be completed entirely from publicly available materials, you do not need to get a case study release from the companies profiled in the case.

Faculty Case Study Release Form

This form documents the faculty member’s intent for how the case is to be used (for use by the GSB only, by other institutions, for inclusion in case books, and/or for use in corporate training programs). When you have finished the case and the faculty member is satisfied with your work, ask him or her to sign this form. You can use either the downloadable word document or the email version of this form.

If your faculty member wants the case to be distributed through Harvard Business School Publishing (HBSP), please make sure that conditions “A” and “B” are checked as shown below. If either “A” or “B” are not checked, the case has academic restrictions and will be distributed by the GSB only, for the uses the faculty member has approved. For more information, see the instructions for filling out the faculty release form.

A. For use by Stanford GSB.
B. For use by other educational institutions, in syllabi and other class use.
C. For use in corporate training programs.
D. For inclusion in copyrighted publications, such as case or text books.

Case Information Form

Your case abstract and learning objectives will be read by more people than the actual case. Prepare a good synopsis of the case and choose the keywords that you think best describe the issues in the case.

Case Checklist

Once your case is final, review the checklist to verify that the case is indeed complete and error free. You do not need to submit the checklist.
