Case Distribution

The method of case distribution is determined by the information given by faculty on the Faculty Case Release Form and email version turned in with the case:

  1. If no academic restrictions are assigned by the faculty member on the Faculty Release Form, the case will be distributed by Harvard Business School Publishing (HBSP). It will be entered into the GSB Case Database, and the PDF will be available for downloading by the GSB community, but those outside Stanford wishing to purchase the case will be referred to HBSP.
  2. If academic restrictions are assigned, the case will only be distributed by GSB Faculty Publications. It will be entered into the GSB Case Database, the PDF will be available for downloading by the GSB community, and all requests to purchase the case will go to our staff, who will act in accordance with the restrictions put on the case by the faculty member on the release form.
  3. Regardless of whether a case is distributed by HBSP or the GSB, all requests for commercial publication will be referred to our staff. We will consult with the faculty author (or area coordinator if the author is not available) before responding to any requests. The following link provides the GSB's policy on Case Permission Requests.

Once the Case Writing Office receives a complete case file (as noted above), the CWO sends the file to Harjeet Heer in the GSB's Case Distribution office in Jackson Library. The cases are mounted on Stanford's site within two days. It takes significantly longer to get cases distributed through Harvard.& At HBSP's request, the school sends the cases to Harvard in batches of 4-5 cases. It generally takes the GSB about a month to accumulate a batch of unrestricted cases for distribution by HBSP. About 6 to 8 weeks after the case has been received by HBSP, it will be mounted on the Harvard Business Online web site for distribution.

Distribution of cases to other educational institutions, corporations and individuals is coordinated by the GSB Faculty Publications Office in Jackson Library. Questions about case distribution? Contact:
