Navigation

There are five types of navigation used across Stanford GSB website:

1. Primary Navigation and the Mega Menu

The primary navigation appears consistently at the top of all pages within our site masthead. In addition to the primary navigation, the masthead contains our GSB identity and tagline. The primary navigation displays links to each main section of our website — The Experience, The Programs, Faculty & Research, Insights, Alumni, and Events. It also displays our global search. When hovered over on desktop, and tapped on touch screens, the primary navigation items expand to reveal our mega menu, which contains secondary page links for five of our primary navigation items. We have implemented two frameworks for our primary navigation in order to accommodate responsive design on varying device sizes.

Desktop Masthead Display

Our desktop mega menu framework is displayed on viewports 1000px wide and larger.

Desktop Mega Menu Display Expanded

Upon hover, a user will reveal our mega menu for The Experience, The Programs, Faculty & Research, Insights, and Alumni Sections. The Events section does not include the mega menu feature, as it does not utilize secondary pages like the other main sections.

Mobile Masthead Display

Our mobile mega menu framework is displayed on viewports 999px wide and narrower.

Mobile Mega Menu Display Expanded

Upon tapping the hamburger icon, a user will reveal our mega menu for The Experience, The Programs, Faculty & Research, Insights, Alumni, and Events sections. Note, all but the Events link includes a plus icon, which allows users to view the secondary pages associated with each of the other five primary navigation links, by tapping direclty on the plus icons. Also included in our mobile menu are our utility navigation links duplicated here, as well as appearing in our main site footer.

2. Section Menu

Section menus, or left navigation menu, are specific to each section. The design for the left navigation supports multiple layers of content hierarchy. The first level, or parent item, can be a section of the mega menu or an office section. The second and third levels display sub-sections within the parent item. Section editors can add section menus to page nodes.

3. Secondary Utility Navigation

The Alumni section of the site required a secondary utility navigation feature, in order to support their users needs passing back and forth between the Postgrads Application, Email, and our Drupal experience. We supported these user needs by providing a secondary utility navigation inside the section banner adjacent to the main site masthead at the top of the page.

4. Breadcrumb

The breadcrumb tells the users where they are within the hierarchy of our site. The breadcrumb appears above the page’s main content and begins with the primary parent item.

5. Footer Menu

There are a number of footer menus which appear across the Stanford GSB website.

The Main Footer

The Main Footer spans the site experience except within the Insights and Alumni sections. The utility navigation included in this footer provides links to social media; links to Stanford GSB sections included in the mega menu; a link to sign up to receive our content by email; links to accessibility, privacy policy, terms of use, and Stanford University’s homepage; and our copyright notice.

Insights Footer

The Insights Footer appears only within the /insights section of the site. It includes links to specific Insights section pages not included in the masthead, About, Follow, and Contact; to all of the insights category pages; additional site-wide utility navigation links; links to accessibility, privacy policy, terms of use, and Stanford University’s homepage; and our copyright notice.

Alumni Footer

The Alumni Footer appears only within the /alumni section of the site. It includes links to social media sites; a number of utility navigation links from the main site footer; “Help” and “Stanford Alumni Association” specific to our Alumni Section for our Alumni users; links to accessibility, privacy policy, terms of use, and Stanford University’s homepage; and our copyright notice.
