Capitalizing on China's Rapidly Emerging Role in the Global Value Chain: From Manufacturing Excellence to Innovation Powerhouse

presented by: The Stanford Global Supply Chain Management Forum

China is becoming an important link in the global supply chains for many companies as it can be the source of supply, manufacturing, distribution, and market of products and services. While tremendous challenges exist in basing a global supply chain around China, the opportunities are also considerable. To take advantage of these opportunities, companies must avoid common pitfalls, overcome institutional and cultural barriers, master the capabilities of integrating information and logistics flows, and develop strategic partnerships with one another in the global supply chain. Global companies (including Chinese companies) are expanding the role that China plays in their supply chain. In addition to providing key manufacturing bases, China has become an important source of product development, technological innovation, new channels, and brand equity.

Stanford University, Eindhoven University, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Accenture hosted this conference November 2-3 in Shanghai, China.Senior executives discussed global best practices in product design and development, manufacturing, operations, and supply chain management. The conference included presentations, panel discussions, interactive roundtables, as well as site visits to nearby manufacturing and logistics operations.
