Gérard Lamarche: Relentless Common Sense to Turnaround Unserviceable Debt
Gérard Lamarche, Senior EVP of Suez, recounted the historic turnaround bringing the $36 billion utility out of an abyss of unserviceable debt to the summit of Corporate Europe. He attributed the company's return to profitability to common sense applied relentlessly: the group needed focus and a return to its historic culture as an engineering stronghold. Lamarche also discussed his passion for people and for the challenges he experienced managing in both the U.S. and in Europe.

Fifth Annual International Development Conference
This year's conference, "Delivering Education in Developing Countries: Challenges and Priorities," focused on the critical importance of education to all aspects of development. Cream Wright, UNICEF's chief of education delivered the keynote address and two panels of experts, including representatives from the World Bank, the United Nations, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, discussed the role of education. Stanford-Tsinghua Exchange Program (STEP) STEP is a pioneering program that encourages cross-cultural learning and network building between the MBA programs of the Tsinghua School of Economics and Management and the Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB). Through initial contact, buddy projects and an exchange, students from both sides will learn about doing business in both China and the US. This should form the basis of a wider and more powerful network that both exchange students and other Tsinghua students can tap into. Students will have opportunities to meet with local businesses, participate in class visits, and enjoy social activities. Details
One Billion Customers
Jim McGregor, best selling author of One Billion Customers, spoke to the GSB about his book as well as his experiences.McGregor is the former China bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal and China CEO for Dow Jones. He is also the former China managing director for GIV Venture Partners, VC fund focused on China and India, and a former board member of Sohu.com. About his recent book, Henry Kissinger commented "James McGregor's knowledge of how business is done in China is extraordinary" and Barron's named it one of the best books of 2005. The event was sponsored by the Stanford Tsinghua Exchange Program and the Global Management Program.
