Brian Tayan, MBA '03 Brian Tayan is a researcher with the Corporate Governance Research Program at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. His work focuses primarily on corporate governance, although he has also written cases in the areas of financial accounting, human resource management, operations, and strategy. Brian has co-authored a book on corporate governance in collaboration with Professor David F. Larcker, titled "Corporate Governance Matters: A Closer Look at Organizational Choices and Their Consequences" available from FT Press. Previously, Brian has worked as a financial analyst in the Office of the CFO at Stanford University and as an investment associate at UBS Private Wealth Management in San Francisco. He received his MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and his BA from Princeton University. |

Michelle E. Gutman Michelle provides program direction and active research assistance for academic efforts to enhance knowledge and education about domestic and international corporate governance. Michelle was instrumental in the writing of the book “Corporate Governance Matters: A Closer Look at Organizational Choices and Their Consequences” published by colleagues Professor David Larcker and Brian Tayan, from concept and outline, to research and release. On an ongoing basis, Michelle provides research input for the innovative, on-line “Stanford Closer Look Series,” teaching cases and for novel research papers such as “Rating the Ratings: How Good are Commercial Governance Ratings?” and “The Market Reaction to Corporate Governance Regulation,” accepted in leading, peer-reviewed academic journals such as The Journal of Financial Economics. She also serves on the Stanford Women on Boards Committee an initiative to increase the representation of women on boards of directors through the following activities: thought-leadership, a learning community and the Stanford Women on Boards Registry and Clearinghouse. She actively manages a private investment trust since 1993, and was licensed as a Series 7-General Securities Representative and Series 66 Investment Advisor Representative. Michelle has extensive global experience in accounting and internal audit, financial management, and operations management. Michelle was with American Express, Inc. for ten years, most recently heading a stand-alone, high security facility as Director, Travelers Cheques Distribution. In this capacity she was responsible for the Western US and Pacific Rim distribution of billions in Travelers Cheques. Earlier she worked for five years with Honeywell Inc., lastly as an accounting manager in Mexico City. Michelle holds a BBA Accounting degree from The George Washington University School of Business.
