Bringing a business perspective on leadership to the public sector:
Working with other groups at the business school, the Center sponsored a week of events (March 4-7, 2008) with government leaders that have business backgrounds, to discuss leadership challenges in the public sector at the local, national and international level.
Gavin Newsom, Mayor of San Francisco, spoke about how many of the traits that made him successful as an entrepreneur have also helped him bring a fresh perspective to government. At the same time, he cautioned that the sectors operate by different rules, which must be appreciated by anybody entering the public sphere. View video

Leading an Industry Turnaround: Lessons from Government Interventions at GM and Chrysler
In 2009, Steve Rattner, a private equity financier and co-founder of the Quadrangle Group, was selected to head the Obama administration’s auto industry task force, where he oversaw a federal bailout and a rapid restructuring of GM and Chrysler in the midst of a severe economic downturn. The group, housed in the U.S. Treasury Department, allocated TARP funds, approved by Congress to assist financial institutions, to restructure the ownership and assets of two major U.S. automakers, while making taxpayers major shareholders in the process. Dozens of related companies, and millions of jobs, were potentially on the line, as the group navigated organizational, political and legal obstacles to rescue the two automakers.
Rattner will assess the situation he faced and decisions that the group made with a little more than a year of hindsight. He will leave most time, however, for questions from students and faculty.
Co-sponsored with the Public Management Program and the Rock Center for Corporate Governance.
