Pulin Sanghvi Named Director
MBA Career Management Center

Pulin Sanghvi, an alumnus of the Class of 1997, is the new Assistant Dean and Director of the Career Management Center at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. In this role, Pulin will have oversight of all career and recruiting services provided by the GSB to students, alumni and employers.

Pulin"We are sensitive to the unique challenges and frustrations facing our students, alumni and recruiters in this economy, and we will be there for our partners every step of the way. We will innovate by offering greater personalization and customization of our services, creating increased connections between students, alumni and recruiters, providing greater support for non-traditional career paths, organizations and geographies, and offering tools and perspectives on work-life visioning."

Pulin brings a unique combination of leadership, strategy, counseling and recruiting experience to this role. As a management consultant with McKinsey & Company in Palo Alto, he served as one of the leaders of McKinsey's firm-wide recruiting effort at the GSB and also interviewed and coached experienced professionals applying to McKinsey. As an investment banker with Morgan Stanley in New York, he played a similar leadership role in Morgan Stanley's firm-wide recruiting effort at Yale. Pulin is also the founder of Ivy Strategy, a career counseling practice that has helped mid- and senior-level executives across a broad range of industries achieve career success through two difficult economic cycles.

Pulin holds an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a BA summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in Economics from Yale University.

Pulin serves as the Yale Alumni Schools Committee Director for the Palo Alto-South San Francisco region. He also serves on the Finance and Development Committees of Positive Coaching Alliance, a national nonprofit launched from the Stanford Athletic Department focused on transforming the culture around youth sports. He can be reached at sanghvi_pulin@gsb.stanford.edu

Questions: What is the outlook for MBA recruiting during 2009-2010? What can I do later this year as my recruiting needs evolve?

We look forward to welcoming organizations this academic year during On-Campus Recruiting and as users of the GSB Job Board and the GSB Resume Database. Similar to last year, the recruiting environment for MBA students will be competitive this year as organizations continue to be cautious about their hiring. With the softer economy, firms will rely heavily on their summer interns to fill full-time positions and offer additional positions only as their needs arise. However, we are seeing increased interest from the health care/medical devices, energy/clean tech and nonprofit/government sectors. A number of sectors are flat and, not surprisingly, financial services firms have fewer positions available thus far.

If your organization’s hiring needs for full-time or internship positions are not yet determined, please stay in touch with us throughout the year. Stanford GSB students have broad career aspirations – their interests span all industries, functions, and geographies – and your organization may find a future leader within our MBA program. We are respectful of your resources and will work closely with you to develop a customized and innovative recruiting strategy that uses your resources effectively and optimizes your potential recruiting success.

There are a variety of recruiting options to consider as your needs evolve:

Keep in touch if your hiring needs change in the coming year, particularly if there are new opportunities you wish to highlight. For a custom consultation or for any questions, please contact us.

New Recruiter Dashboard
The CMC is pleased to announce the launch of our new Recruiter Dashboard on August 24. We have upgraded the recruiting system for the convenience of all users.

  • The new user interface will be easier to navigate.
  • Your jobs will reach a broader student audience due to improved ‘nesting.’ For example, a position located in Mexico City will automatically be seen by students searching in Mexico City, Mexico, or North America. A position in the semiconductor industry will also be seen by students searching in the technology industry.
  • Be assured that your historical data will be carried over.

Please use this use this link from now on to access the new Recruiter Dashboard.

Launching new software is a complex process and there are sometimes a few “bumps” in the initial phase. If you are experiencing any difficulties with the new recruiting system or need any assistance with the implantation of the new Dashboard, please contact your Recruiting Relationship Manager.

MBA Global Career Forum
Please remember that a great recruiting opportunity for Stanford GSB students will be through the MBA Global Career Forum. For more information, go to http://www.mbagcf.com/

EAP Reminder
The Exclusive Academic Period (EAP) was established to enable first-year students to focus exclusively on academics through the first six weeks of the MBA program.

The EAP begins August 1 and ends November 2, 2009. Recruiters cannot have any contact or communication with first-year students during the EAP. However, organizations can communicate with their former employees.

Can We Grow the Economy?
What can we expect as the world’s economy emerges from its most serious downturn in almost a century? The short answer is a “new normal,” with slower growth, a de-risked and more stable core financial system, and a set of additional challenges (energy, climate, and demographic imbalances, to name a few) with varying time horizons that will test our collective capacity to improve management and oversight of the global economy.

India's Slums Represent Complex Political and Social Issues
Slums like those depicted in the popular film "Slumdog Millionaire" are complex communities with residents of different income levels, sometimes complex relations between ethnic groups, and systems of political patronage that interest Saumitra Jha, an assistant professor of political economy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
