Synthesis Seminar

If As we were designing the new GSB curriculum, a recommendation came from our alumni for a final course to cement the MBA experience. And so this spring quarter, our second-year students will be the first to take what we call the “Synthesis Seminar.” The course complements the first year’s Critical Analytical Thinking (CAT) seminar and involves the same group of 16 students.

The course seeks both to synthesize what has already been learned and to help students shape their personal and professional aspirations beyond the GSB. The Synthesis Seminar therefore has two distinct parts:

General Management Synthesis: As students advance professionally, the problems and challenges faced will be increasingly ambiguous and difficult to define. How can students best achieve genuine, distinctive impact?

The first half of the Synthesis Seminar foreshadows such an experience through a series of three general management challenges, each of which simulates a corporate executive meeting, with GSB alumni participating as board members and judges. To further the realism, we will present the information as students find it in the outside world: undigested, incomplete, of varying quality, and at times internally inconsistent. We also ask the students to identify the key issues and how to approach them, rather than spelling out what questions should be answered. By doing so, we hope that students will reinforce what they’ve learned at the GSB, assess any gaps that may remain, and leverage these skills in a setting which more closely resembles that which students will find in their career.

Professional and Personal Development: Students’ ultimate career success will be determined less by their current skill set and more by how well they learn, adapt, and continue to develop over the coming years. The second half of the Synthesis Seminar provides an opportunity for each individual to step back, think about what is truly important (both personally and professionally) and begin to make a plan for lifelong development and learning.

Students are supported by two mentors with extensive work and life experience, most of whom are GSB alumni. These classes address three major life and career themes: Fulfillment and Meaning; Failure and Resilience; and Transitions and Renewal. Through engagement with these topics, we hope to help create a foundation for lifelong learning and to enhance students’ abilities to handle the inevitable, unexpected events throughout one’s career and life.

Questions: What is the best way to recruit now for open positions? How do I develop a recruiting strategy for next year?

As you identify additional hiring needs this spring, please contact us. We can recommend a number of avenues for connecting you with talented students who are still seeking the right opportunity. We work closely with student clubs and career advisors to highlight intern and full-time positions. It’s not too late to identify and hire talented students for your organization!

The CMC's goal is to work in partnership with you as you develop your recruiting strategy for next year. We are happy to set one-on-one strategy sessions with you on campus, by phone, or in your office. Since each organization has specific needs and resources, these personal conversations will help you refine your plans for a successful recruiting experience. We have experience working with organizations (from small to large) in a broad range of sectors and welcome the opportunity to discuss what approach will best meet your needs.

If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact a Recruiting Services team member.
