Frequently Asked Questions

Can my organization host pre-matriculation events?

Organizations may hold summer welcome events for admitted students. These events must be social or networking events and not have a recruiting focus. If a student is unable to attend he or she should not be penalized in your future recruiting efforts.

To market your welcome event, email MBA Admissions. Admissions will not provide organizations with names and contact information but will send your email to admitted students who have confirmed matriculation. It is up to the admitted students whether or not they choose to attend.

If you hold a summer event and gather names of students, the Recruiter Policies do not allow you to contact them during the Exclusive Academic Period (EAP) of August 1 - November 2, 2009. This respects the school's policy of no recruiting or club activities during this period.

Are there any dates after the end of the EAP on November 2 that an organization must avoid for privately targeted or club events for MBA1s?

Yes, organizations cannot begin to hold private or club events for first-year students until on or after November 9. This is because the week of November 2 is set aside to allow time for firms to promote their events to students. The other date to avoid is November 18 which is the GSB-sponsored Recruiter Day/Company Networking Night for MBA1s. Separately, note that organizations should not schedule any events for October 6; this is the date of the Company Networking Night for MBA2s.

It is required that all on- and off-campus events are submitted to and approved by a Recruiting Relationship Manager prior to finalizing and publishing the events. This event review process is designed to avoid conflicts between organizations that are targeting students in the same industry.

My organization is smaller than many that recruit at the GSB. How does the recruiting program support my efforts?

The Recruiter Day format for MBA1s and the Company Networking Night format for both MBA1s and MBA2s are designed to increase the number of students that all organizations see at the beginning of the recruiting cycle. With multiple organizations participating at these marquee events, student attendance is higher than at events held by individual organizations.

I am planning my activities for the upcoming recruiting season. Should I confer with the CMC on these dates and plans?

Yes, it is mandatory that all on- and off-campus events be submitted to and approved by a Recruiting Relationship Manager prior to finalizing and publishing your events. This event review process is designed to avoid conflicts that would negatively impact your attendance and prevent students from meeting multiple organizations.

How do I advertise my recruiting events?

The Employer Communication Tool is available for all on-campus recruiting (OCR) organizations on the Recruiter Dashboard. This tool can be used to send an announcement to your target audience. Employers have used this tool to market on- or off-campus events, increase interest in their specific OCR opportunity, and/or highlight news about a successful company initiative. You can also include graphics or logos in your announcement to make it more compelling.

After creating your message, you select the target student audience based on industry and functional preferences that students have indicated. CMC staff will check daily for employer communication requests and send them to the targeted students. The CMC will not send email communications or event advertisements to student clubs, except for diversity clubs. Due to the Family Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the CMC is not able to release the names of the students that your message has been sent to.

By using the Employer Communications Tool you will broaden your pool of interested students and secure their attention with targeted communications. You can also advertise or stuff student mailboxes through the student newspaper. In addition, consider using the Resume Databases to send out invitation emails.

My organization wants to plan a career education event with a student club. How do we do this?

Complete the online Recruiting Event Request form.

Your request will be reviewed by the CMC to ensure that the date(s) you propose do not conflict with academic requirements or previously-scheduled recruiting activities and that the information is complete. The form will then be forwarded to the Club(s) for review and the Club will respond to you directly.

When will MBA1s join clubs?

MBA1s will join clubs on October 28 at the Student Activities Fair.

Can my organization place a welcome advertisement in the Stanford Business Reporter in the fall?

Organizations can place ads in The Reporter at the start of the academic year welcoming back MBA2s. Ads welcoming MBA1s to the GSB community should be placed after November 2, 2009.

Can my organization stuff student mailboxes with welcome messages?

Organizations can stuff MBA2 mailboxes after classes begin on September 21, 2009. MBA1 mailboxes can be stuffed starting on November 2, 2009.

When can my organization hold evaluative recruiting events for MBA1s?

Starting November 9, 2009. The Exclusive Academic Period (EAP) was established to enable first-year students to focus exclusively on the rigorous academic program in the Fall Quarter through the first six weeks of the MBA program. The EAP begins August 1, 2009 and ends November 2, 2009. The week of November 2 is designated as a time for firms to promote future events to MBA1s, therefore organization events can occur no earlier than November 9.

What is the Global Experience Requirement and how do students fulfill it? Can my organization get involved?

The Global Experience Requirement (GER) is a graduation requirement ensuring that students broaden their understanding of the global context of management. Students must complete a significant international management experience prior to winter quarter of their second year. Also, the GER must be fulfilled in a country new to the student.

The GER can be completed in one of the following ways:

  1. Join a Global Study Trip led by students and a participating faculty member.
  2. Participate in a Global Management Immersion Experience (GMIX). A GMIX is a 4-week program at the end of the summer between the first and second year of study; it follows a regular 10-week summer internship.
  3. Participate in a Service Learning Trip organized by the Public Management Program.
  4. Petition for a summer internship to count toward fulfilling the requirement. The Associate Dean and Director of the MBA Program is the arbiter of these petitions.
  5. Participate in either the Stanford GSB-Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management Exchange Program (STEP) or the Indian Institute of Management (Bangalore) Exchange Program (SAIL) programs.

If your company is possibly interested in participating in these opportunities, please contact your Recruiting Relationship Manager.
