Old School Ties
There are hundreds of ways to tell the story of the first 75 years of Stanford Business School, and I must say I surprised myself when I focused on its curriculum, of all things, played against the people and events that influenced it (see cover story). But, on second thought, it isn't all that strange. We all—students, faculty, and staff—look at the School through a prism and see only our own small, personal pieces of its history. What connects those separate histories is the institution and the deans who led it. One of those deans, Arjay Miller, is profiled.

You can test your memory of your years at Stanford—and some of the lore you've heard along the way—by turning to the crossword puzzle. It is available online in Portable Document Format (PDF). The puzzle spans the full 75 years of the Business School, so if any one of you is able to complete it without consulting the solution, you should be recognized for your remarkable institutional recall. Send us an email or give us a call; we'd like to know about you.

My own 12-year history at the Business School ends this month. I am leaving to help edit my local community newspaper, the Half Moon Bay Review. One of my neighbors asked me if I was doing it as a hobby. No, I told him, I'm doing it as a vocation. I fear that lost in all the excitement that surrounds this otherwise wonderful new era of globalization and e-commerce are our communities. This is how I can best use my skills for my community.
