All in the Family
IN A MAGAZINE THAT FEATURES coverage by, for, or about GSB alumni/ae, we find special pleasure in introducing our readers to an alumnus three times over--Robert Joss, Sloan '66, MBA '67, PhD '70--who will become the School's eighth dean in September. Dean-designate Joss may call himself "the most inside of outsiders," but we wonder how someone with so many professional, personal, and family connections to the School can possibly consider himself an outsider.

This magazine offers several ways of maintaining your own connections to the GSB, and one is to contribute your ideas. For example, a major story in this issue was initiated by an alum. Last fall, Kris Olson, MBA '81, wrote us that she enjoyed the profile of Steve Gluckstern, MBA '82 (see Stanford Business, September 1998), and suggested that Great Plains Software CEO Doug Burgum, MBA '80, might make a great story for a future issue. We agreed. Contributing writer Jennifer Reese interviewed Burgum in March, photographer Steve Niedorf (see below) trekked out to Fargo in April to spend the better part of a day with Burgum, and the resulting story is online. Thanks, Kris, you were right. And thanks to all of you who have shared your comments and suggestions with us over the years.

Minneapolis-based photographer STEVE NIEDORF enjoys the challenge of visual improvisation required on location. His corporate assignments have taken him from Boston to Belarus. Recipient of 10 Communication Arts Photography Annual excellence awards, Niedorf's clients include 3M, Cargill, IBM, Honeywell, and Wells Fargo.

The work of PETER HORJUS is currently part of an exhibition showcasing 100 international illustrators and their interpretations of the home of the future. Showings are scheduled for Madrid, Frankfurt, Paris, and New York City. Horjus, a native Californian now working in San Diego, is modest about his many awards: "I think awards are simply reminders that you're not washed up." His favorite clients include Rolling Rock Beer, American Express, and Stanford Business, of course.

ROBERT HOLMGREN is a Menlo Park, Calif., photographer specializing in editorial portraiture. His work has appeared in Business Week, Forbes, Inc., Time, Smithsonian, and Newsweek, as well as in various computer-related magazines.

Simplicity and concept are the hallmarks of CRAIG FRAZIER's style of illustration, which made him a natural for our feature story on organizational IQ. His work is commissioned by national design firms, advertising agencies, and corporate and editorial publications. A former graphic designer, Frazier lives in Mill Valley, Calif., with his wife and two children.

Freelance illustrator GENE GREIF works in mixed-media collage. His clients include the New York Times, Rolling Stone, MTV, and America Online. Greif, who is currently writing and illustrating a series of children's books, spends his days in Chelsea, N.Y., making art in the company of his red tabby, Pancha.
