Stanford Project on the Evolution of Nonprofits (SPEN): Objectives
SPEN will:
- Create new knowledge about the social sector that will inform nonprofit leaders, funders, and policy makers;
- Support curriculum development for use in teaching MBA and executive education courses; and
- Engage social sector leaders in meaningful discussion to share and expand the knowledge created by the project.
Professor Powell teaches a course on nonprofit organizations for both Stanford MBA and School of Education students in which students write papers on specific projects related to SPEN. As findings emerge, SPEN will convene seminars, focus groups, and conferences to share results and encourage discussion among sector stakeholders. The opportunity to share experiences and contribute to new knowledge provides an incentive for organizations to participate and serves the broader research and teaching mission of the Center for Social Innovation.
