While classroom-based learning is the primary focus of the program, several other factors play roles in determining its overall impact.  In addition to leading academic programming, aspects such as Stanford's cultural environment and social atmosphere are what make participation in the Stanford Executive Program a truly life-changing experience.

Participants leave the Stanford Executive Program with more than just newly acquired knowledge and tools. They also leave with new energy, new friends, and lifelong memories of their six weeks at Stanford.

The powerful bond that forms among program participants is a direct result of the program's balanced design. While the academic curriculum is intellectually demanding, it also takes advantage of every possible opportunity for participants to get to know one another and to enjoy the beautiful local surroundings.

Practicing a Healthy Lifestyle

All participants are encouraged to take part in the optional physical health component of the Stanford Executive Program.  Based on strong evidence that a healthier lifestyle benefits executives in many ways, the program features daily outdoor morning exercise sessions administered by a team of leading professional fitness instructors. Participants take part in these exercise sessions as a group and follow a regimen that is customized based on each participant's fitness level. Over the course of the program, participants can pursue more aggressive exercise routines as their fitness level increases.

Participants consistently rank the morning exercise component of the program as one of the most popular and rewarding extracurricular activities. In addition, participants frequently organize friendly sporting matches and contests on the weekends.

Getting to Know Participants and Faculty

Throughout the program, many special events are organized to create memorable opportunities for the participants to build relationships with each other, to informally interact with Stanford faculty members, and to celebrate the cultural diversity of their participant group. Each week the program staff (with the help of any interested participants) plans a Friday night gala dinner and reception that showcases the cultural, culinary, and social traditions of the countries represented in the program. Other events have included a private dinner at the Monterey Bay Aquarium featuring presentations by program alumni, a private dinner and tour at the local Thomas Fogarty winery, and a finale weekend dinner cruise of San Francisco Bay for participants and their families.

Staying Close to Family and Loved Ones

For many participants, attending the Stanford Executive Program entails a difficult personal choice, as they must spend time away from a spouse, partner, child, or other loved one. Recognizing the gravity of this commitment, the directors of the program incorporate several family-friendly aspects into its design.

Participants enjoy a mid-program break of nearly four days, during which they may return home or have loved ones come to the San Francisco area for a visit.

Having no mandatory classes on weekends means that further visits within North America are possible, and guests are always welcome at the program's Friday night gala dinners.

Finally, participants are encouraged to invite family members and other guests to attend the program's finale weekend, during which events are planned with families, guests, and children in mind.

The Stanford Executive Program has been a life-changing experience. It has been an immense amount of fun and an immense amount of learning. We made some great friendships that all of us will work hard to keep. And we all developed a lot of understanding in the broadest sense of that word.
