Eligibility: Employment

To qualify, the applicant must be working in an organization that is located in a developing country. Eligible countries are those classified or estimated to be classified by the World Bank as “upper middle,” “lower middle,” and “low income” countries as defined by the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of $10,090 or below (See World Bank: Gross National Income Index). If an applicant is working for an organization in a country not listed by the World Bank, then the applicant can appeal to be reconsidered for eligibility. Also, if an applicant is working for an organization in a country whose World Bank GNI is between the upper middle income and high income categories, then the applicant can appeal to be reconsidered for eligibility. In order to appeal, the applicant should submit a letter describing the reasons why their country should be considered a qualifying country.

  • Applicants must demonstrate non-US citizenship (e.g. a passport).
  • Applicants returning to their home countries will be given preference. Other factors, including income, assets, and degree of loan indebtedness, will be used to determine eligibility.
  • The applicant must work at least halftime (20 hours or more).
  • If the applicant changes jobs, if his/her salary changes, or his/her marital status changes, the applicant must notify the GSB Financial Aid office immediately. The applicant will be required to repay any funds that were given for which they have later become ineligible.
  • If you are starting an entrepreneurial venture, then you must submit a copy of your business plan, financial projections, capitalization strategy, and cash flow statements.
  • The GSB considers volunteerism working without compensation; therefore we do not consider volunteered activities a qualified employment for the program.
