Global Study Trips

Mainland China Global Study Trip

Student-initiated Global Study Trips complement the classroom experience by offering students the opportunity to interact with global leaders from around the world. In preparation for the trip, students host speakers on topics such as macroeconomic policy and political history and facilitate discussions on culture and business etiquette. Upon returning to campus, students complete a report and share their experiences and key takeaways with the business school community.

2007-2008 Global Study Trips

In the 2007-2008 academic year, students led the following trips:

Winter 2007

  • Australia
    The Australia Study Trip visited Sydney, Melbourne, and Cairns. Participants met with government leaders, the Australian Football League, and Qantas management; they also explored the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest, and local wineries.

  • China (Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Macau)
    The study trip to southern China allowed students to learn about the Chinese value chain, understand how companies successfully penetrate the Chinese market, and uncover underlying problems facing Chinese society and the risks of doing business in China.

  • China (Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou)
    From the Shanghai Stock Exchange to Alibaba.com to the Ministry of Commerce, trip participants explored the context and contrasts that are shaping China's economic, political and cultural landscape. Students also looked at the main facilities for the 2008 Olympics as a live case study of how these worlds intersect.

  • Ghana
    In December 2007, students visited Accra, Cape Coast, Kokrobite, Kumasi and Ahafo while Ghana celebrated its 50th anniversary of independence. Participants explored numerous industries, including a gold mine, tribal leaders, a teaching hospital, a brewery, and the national cocoa board.

  • Los Angeles/New York City
    Through travel to the media and entertainment industry’s twin capitals, LA and NY, students on this trip uncovered avenues in entertainment open to MBAs. Meetings with noteworthy professionals in cinema, print, sports management, and television gave participants first-hand knowledge of the business and creative elements of the industry as well as a sense of the overall impact of the digital revolution.

  • Middle East (Egypt, Dubai)
    The study trip to Dubai and Egypt showcased both the old and the new in the Middle East. Students were able to experience a region in transition from many perspectives, including a hot air balloon ride over the Nile in Luxor, the Pyramids at night, and meetings with non-profit, energy, finance, real estate and hotel management professionals.

  • Singapore/Malaysia
    Students encountered living case studies about public and private sector relationships when they visited Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Students explored government and business partnerships by visiting local manufacturing plants and meeting with top dignitaries and global business leaders from the energy, tourism, financial services, and airline sectors.

  • South Africa
    This trip focused on business in a multi-racial environment and the related political, economic, and social issues that post-apartheid South Africa faces. Students explored the challenges of global leadership at multinationals, non-profit foundations, energy companies, and wineries.

  • South Korea
    The South Korea trip’s itinerary covered culture, technology, and leadership. Participants visited major companies and government officials responsible for driving innovation and economic growth in the country. They also learned about the prospects for re-unification during their visit to the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Spring 2008

  • Brazil
    Students visited “the heart and colorful soul of South America’s Economic Leader” this spring. Participants gained exposure to a strong emerging economy and an innovative business environment, social awareness, and cultural richness during their stay in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. 

  • Costa Rica
    Costa Rica Global Study Trip participants explored the country’s business strategies for positioning itself as one of the premiere ecotourism destinations in the world. Their visits included the Ministry of Tourism, a variety of eco-lodges, a Chiquita plantation, and the Rainforest Alliance.

  • Italy
    Members of the Italy Global Study Trip travelled to Rome, Florence, and Milan. There, they learned about Italian food, culture, government, and soccer and how these aspects interact in Italian businesses. They visited with companies in media, fashion, and financing, including Ferrari-Maserati, Gruppo Banca Leonardo, Cinecitta Film Studios, and the AC Milan soccer club.

  • Russia
    Students discovered Russia’s political, social, and economic significance and gained an understanding of the global influence that Russia wields. Participants visited with major companies, dignitaries, and other leaders in Moscow and St. Petersburg and helped promote Stanford in Russia.

  • Scandinavia
    Participants on the study trip to Copenhagen and Stockholm compared and contrasted Denmark's and Sweden’s cultures, business environments, and socio-political systems. Students gained an understanding of what makes the Nordic region so prominent in the world of business and what environmental factors have given birth to global leaders like Lego, H&M, and Ikea.

  • UK/Ireland
    Trip participants visited the UK and Ireland and learned how these islands off Continental Europe continue to play such an important role on the world stage. Students met with the CEOs and business leaders of some of the world's most distinguished organizations and explored the landscapes of the British and Irish economies.

Summer 2008

  • Germany
    Students on the Germany trip took in the rich cultural history of the country while they were in Berlin, Gütersloh, Munich, and Stuttgart. They met with several of Germany’s leading global companies in apparel, automotive, media, financial, and energy sectors, among others.
