- On the Homepage, scroll to the What Type of Data Are You Looking for? section and browse the topics to find a database which contains data for your research query.
- Use the keyword search. The search boxes are located at the end of the top tab bar or below the database listing in the left column.
-
To find variables, click the Tools tab at top.
For more information on variables, click the links at the top of each database search page, e.g. Dataset List, Variables Descriptions, Manuals and Overview etc.
- For instruction on complex topics in WRDS, click the E-Leaning tab. Below is the list of select topics offered as the interactive video presentations by WRDS professionals. Some demonstrations are also available in a PDF file format.

WRDS : Jump-Start Guide
WRDS (Wharton Research Data Services) is a web-based platform which combines multiple financial and economics research databases containing current and historical data series.
- Long runs of financial and economic data series, with a common search interface
- Data downloadable to multiple formats, e.g. Excel, CSV, Text, SAS, SPSS, and STATA
How to Access
On the Databases A-Z, go to individual WRDS databases, e.g. Compustat, CRSP, TAQ, etc. Login with SUNet ID, and then enter your Stanford email address on the opening page.
See WRDS Documentation.
Stanford Faculty, Staff, PhD students, and Research Assistants: To obtain Unix access, you may request a personal account. It takes a day or so for the account to become active.
How to Search
WRDS offers a common interface and consistent data format across all datasets. Start by selecting a database from the Current Subscription list on the left; then narrow down to a desired dataset.
On the search form, proceed with the following:
- Select a date range.
- Select entities / companies. Note the additional options for entering codes:
a) Upload a file containing entities codes. The file should contain codes recognized by WRDS and saved in "Formatted Text (space delimitted)" format.
b) Search across the entire database.
- Select variables, the items you want to include in your output report. Each dataset has its own specific set of variables.
Use the Conditional Statements to screen the companies when you search across the entire database.
- Select the output format. Click the Submit Query at the bottom of the page.
