What cultural, market, technological, and institutional challenges and opportunities will firm X need to consider in order to successfully do business in country Y?

These sources all provide extensive company information and allow screening by various criteria - geography, market cap, industry, etc.

OneSource North America Business Browser [icon - Special Password]
Select Companies to do a scan of companies by various criteria, e.g. market cap. Use NAICS industry codes [Personal Account [icon - Special Password]]

ORBIS [icon - Stanford]
Profiles about 60 million public and private companies worldwide.

Thomson One Banker-Analytics [icon - Stanford]
On main screen, select Search For Companies button at left. Expand Stock & Earnings Criteria to use Latest Market Cap search (e.g., less than or equal to 2,000 million). You can also screen for firms by country or stock exchange. Or in Advanced Search, screen by many detailed items

Includes cultural, leadership style and travel information.
First time users:
scroll to the bottom of the login page and create an account using your GSB e-mail address.

If your country is not included in Country Navigator, you can try the Geert Hofstede Cultural Dimensions website for the cultural information.

Provides basic economic, political, historical, cultural, and environmental information on 192 countries.

 

World Bank Development Indicators
Provides over 700 social, demographic, and economic variables on 228 countries; includes extensive time series.

Measures of country performance, over the last several years. The print edition IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook is available in the Reference Collection (World Data Section: World Statistics) in Jackson Library.

Doing Business In…
Provides information on regulations for business in various countries.

Index of Economic Freedom
Scores measures and ranks 161 countries across 10 specific freedoms, things like tax rates and property rights.

Political & Social Data

Human Development Report
Global regional and country reports put out by the UN Development Program

Freedom House Survey
The Freedom in the World survey contains reports on 193 countries and 15 related and disputed territories. Each country report begins with a section containing: population, capital, political rights (numerical rating), civil liberties (numerical rating), status (Free, Partly Free, or Not Free), and a ten-year ratings timeline.

Country Commercial Guides
U.S. Dept of State provides information on industires in various countries. Free registration is required.

 

 

Penn World Table
The Penn World Table provides purchasing power parity and national income accounts converted to international prices for 188 countries for some or all of the years 1950-2004.
