Jackson Library's 75th Anniversary

Jackson Library was formally inaugurated on April 3, 1933, some seven years after the founding of the Business School. The new facility was located in a room in the Quad that measured 30 feet by 40 and held about 1,000 volumes and tables for sixty students. In addition to the core collection, the Library contained corporate reports, volumes of leading business journals and various other research materials, many supposedly transferred directly from Dean Jackson's own collection.

In 1966 the Library moved to its present central location, thanks in part to the energy and dedication of longtime Director Marion Smith. The collections continued to grow, focusing on the teaching needs of the School as it evolved into the premier institution of general management that it is today. As in the past, Jackson Library will continue to grow and change to support the students and scholars of the 21st century.

On April 23, 2008, Jackson Library commemorated its past -- and toasted the future -- with a gala celebration.

A Message from Dean Robert L. Joss

I am very sorry to be in India (talking about the GSB of course!) while the 75th birthday celebration for Jackson Library is taking place. I was looking forward to being part of the festivities. Our school is now 83 years old, and the most significant continuing institutional force in our history has been the library. Congratulations on this remarkable milestone, and sincere thanks to all those who steward the wonderful tradition of service and support which exemplifies the Jackson Library. It is a great time and reason to celebrate. Please allow food and drink throughout the library today!

My very best personal wishes to all,
Bob Joss
