Moments of Truth by Jan Carlzon

Moments of Truth tells the story of how Jan Carlzon, president and CEO of Scandinavian Airlines System, turned a mediocre state-run airline into a profitable business that consistently won passenger preference surveys. His strategy focused on the customer, encouraged risk taking and delegated more authority to front-line employees. This strategy was based on a concept first formulated by Richard Normann in 1984 that performance is based on interactions between customers and employees that either helps to retain customers or sends them to the competition. This book offers an interesting perspective on the importance of the frontline employee to business.

Although written with a British audience in mind this book contains lots of hidden gems. The self-evaluation chapter will help you set goals, followed by several chapters on how to compile resumes and CVs. The book offers a step by step overview of what to expect during an interview as well as how to juggle job offers. This is a great resource to help you start the process of moving to a new place in your career.

Who was Kilroy and how did he get "here?

In December 1946 the New York Times credited James J. Kilroy, a welding inspector at the Bethlehem Steel shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts, with starting the craze. Inspectors used a small chalk mark to indicate that work had been checked and completed, Unscrupulous riveters discovered that, if they started work before the inspector arrived, they could receive extra pay by erasing the previous worker's chalk mark and chalking a mark farther back on the same seam, giving themselves credit for some of the previous riveter's work. To prevent this, Mr. Kilroy marked his welding work with the long crayoned phrase ("Kilroy was here") on the items he inspected. At the time, ships were being sent out before they had been painted, so when sealed areas were opened for maintenance, soldiers found an unexplained name scrawled. Thousands of servicemen may have potentially seen his slogan on the outgoing ships and Kilroy's omnipresence and inscrutability sparked the legend.Thus Kilroy became the super – GI who always got there first.It is said that servicemen began placing the slogan on different places, especially in new captured areas or landings. It became a challenge be the first to place the phrase in unusual places around the globe.

TED: Ideas Worth Spreading The website name TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design.TED started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. The annual conference does just that, bringing together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes). The site makes the best talks and performances from TED available to the public for free. More than 200 talks from archives are available. Listen to Stephen Hawking, Al Gore, Craig Venter and many more fascinating people.

EventVestor is a data and analytics platform for event driven investment analysis and business decision-making. The database identifies key corporate actions, market reactions, and macro economic events in a near real-time structured database.
