Is There A Doctor In The House?  Market Signals and Tomorrow’s Supply Of Doctors by UC Berkeley professor Richard M. Scheffler brings an economist’s insight to the growing concern of Americans for adequate health care.  Schleffer shows how shifts in market power underlie the changes we have seen in the health workforce and how they will affect the future availability of doctors. In addition, he makes predictions for the United States and international physician workforce, and offers a template for enhancing the overall efficiency of the health care system. The combination of low birth rates and rising life expectancy is producing rapid aging of the world’s population, and stagnation in the number of people of working age in Western societies. The Age of Aging: How Demographics Are Changing The Global Economy And Our World by economist George Magnus addresses the coming broad economic effects, and how aging societies will affect family and social structures. The author asserts that the old age bulge in developing countries has major implications for globalization and immigration, and that challenges arising from aging societies will probably not be addressed effectively unless governments assume larger economic and social responsibility.  (HB1531.M34 2009)

Be The Change by Lisa Endlich, highlights men and women whose deeply personal philanthropy is dramatically changing the way we think about giving.  There are 8.6 million millionaires in the United States today, and these numbers are set to rise.  As $41 trillion dollars moves from the WWII generation to their baby boomer children, it is imperative that these beneficiaries begin thinking seriously about philanthropy.  Through candid interviews Endlich brings readers to know the thinking behind some of the top names in philanthropy today  --  Melinda Gates, Paul Tudor Jones, Peter Bloom and others.  (HV27.E53 2008)
