Library FAQ: Borrowing and Access
1. Is the library open to non-Stanford students?
A: Anyone may obtain a one-day courtesy access pass to Jackson Library seven times per academic year (Oct-Sept.). You will be asked to fill out a short application form and show a picture ID. Additional visits and borrowing privileges are available on a fee basis.
In addition to courtesy access, special access policies apply to alumni, domestic partners of current students and staff, and many other affiliated groups.
For details, call 650-723-2162, ask at the Library's Front Desk, or email us.
2. Do GSB alumni have special privileges?
A: Yes. GSB alumni have lifetime courtesy access and borrowing privileges. For details, check GSB Alumni Services page, call 650-723-2162, or email us.
3. Can I find out if a book is checked out before I come to the library?
A: Yes, by checking Jackson Library's Online Catalog or Socrates, which lists holdings for all Stanford libraries.
4. Can I borrow library material?
A: Borrowing privileges vary according to patron type, so ask at the desk, call 650-723-2162 or e-mail us for specifics. The standard loan periods for Stanford students are 4 weeks for books, 4 days for corporate reports, and two hours for reserve material. Overdue fines apply so pay attention due dates and times. All circulating material is subject to recall after two weeks. Newspapers, current issues of periodicals and reference materials do not circulate.
5. Can I renew material online?
A: Yes. As long as no one has requested it, you may renew most material via the Jackson Library Catalog by clicking on the My Library Record button. You can also access your personal borrowing records via My Library Record.
6. Can I renew material over the phone or by e-mail?
A: Yes. You can renew most material by phone or e-mail. Call the Circulation Desk at 650-723-2162 or e-mail jackson.library@gsb.stanford.edu.
7. Are there limits to what non-GSB patrons may use in Jackson's collection?
A: Due to academic licensing agreements and other restrictions, some databases and materials are available only to GSB clientele. Some are restricted to Stanford clientele. Most types of information, however, are available through alternative sources that are accessible to all. When requesting assistance, give your patron status to the desk staff, who can then direct you to the best information source available to you. Ask at the desk or e-mail us for more details.
8. What's the deal with your academic licensing agreements? Can't exceptions be made?
A: Certain databases offer academic licensing at a reduced rate so that faculty and students can use them for school projects. These database vendors are well aware of the high demand for their product, and only offer the reduced rate under the strict understanding that access will be limited to academic use by the faculty and students at our School. If we were to make exceptions, we would lose this licensing, thus losing our only affordable access to a product that is of great value to our primary clientele. Therefore we cannot make any exceptions, not even to those who have access to the product at another institution.
9. Is non-Stanford access restricted to specific time periods?
A: No. We do reserve the right to restrict use of any facility, resource, or service in order to maintain appropriate levels of service to our primary clientele, but this is only done as needed when a particular resource is overtaxed.
