Library FAQ: Computing

1. Can I access your databases from off campus?

A:Yes. GSB users can access web-based databases remotely through WebApps. Other Stanford users can find remote access instruction on the Restricted Electronic Resources page. Non-Stanford users may not access our databases from off campus.

2. Can I print from your databases?

A: Jackson Library provides unlimited free printing for GSB students and the GSB community, including GSB alumni. Choose Printers Library1, Library1A or Library2 to print in the Library.

Printing is provided for a fee for non-GSB users. The cost is 10 cents per page. To print:

  1. Log in using the Stanford Login ( User name: Stanford; Password: stan99ford;Domain: SU-GSB)
  2. Print to Printer Library1B (default), located at the Library Front Desk.
  3. Retrieve printouts and pay for printing at the Library's Front Desk. Cash or checks accepted for payment.

Downloading: As an alternative to printing, all patrons can download data. Some databases also allow you to send data to your e-mail address. Ask at the Information Desk or e-mail us for details.

3. Why did you start charging for printing? Printing used to be free.

A: Jackson Library was the last place on campus where printing was free. As a result, our facilities were exploited. This caused problems for our students. In addition, the cost for public printing has grown for the past several years. The volume of printing has grown to a level such that the Library can no longer absorb this.

4. Can I access my e-mail from a Jackson computer?

A: The Jackson Library computers are equipped with standard web browsers (Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator) and a basic telnet application (Samson), so you should be able to reach any email system that allows these types of connections.

5. Do you check out laptop computers?

A: No. There are many local companies that do rent laptops, some of whom may even deliver. Check the yellow pages under "Computer Rental & Lease."

Faculty and Staff: Information Technology does provide laptops for GSB faculty and staff short-term use. Faculty should contact GSB Faculty Laptops to reserve a laptop. Staff should send their requests via e-mail to Staff Laptop Requests.

6. What facilities do you provide for those who bring their own laptops?

A: GSB patrons may plug into the GSB network at Ethernet ports available in the group study rooms on the second floor. There are numerous electrical outlets throughout the library that non-GSB laptop owners may use, but we cannot provide any sort of network access.
