Reference Service

Reference service is coordinated by the Research Services department at Jackson Library. This group is responsible for staffing the Information Desk in the Library, as well as responding to reference questions received by e-mail, Instant Messaging or other means. Feel free to visit the Desk in person, or contact Ask a Librarian for research assistance.

Reference Room

The traditional heart of the Library collections, the Reference Room contains print research material including handbooks, dictionaries, investment data, company directories, and statistical data.

How is it Organized?

Reference Room

The Reference Collection is not arranged in strict call number order, like the main book stacks. Instead, it is divided into alphabetically arranged subject sections (e.g. Motor Vehicles), or geographical areas (e.g. France) -- and only then, within each section, by call number.

These sections are meant to be good starting points, but since some topics may be potentially covered by more than one section (motor vehicles in Japan, for example), there may be more than one place to look for information in the Room. When looking for a specific item, you might check the online catalog first for its exact location.

Key Areas of the Collection

For easy browsing, the Alphabetical Subject Sectionalong the walls contains categories on industries and subjects ranging from "Accounting" to the "Wine Industry."

The World Data Section is a collection of international information on countries and regions, arranged geographically, as well as trade data and statistical sources on all countries.

Other key areas include:

General Data Section: dictionaries, general

Corporation Directories: company lists

Who's Who: biographical sources

Investment Research Reports

U.S. Section: statistics, directories, census

Industry Data: overviews and analysis

California Section: California material

Stocks: rating services, price data

Associations and Organizations: directories

Mutual Funds: directories and ratings

Where to Start

Company Information

Check the Corporation Directories on Table B, or the Alphabetical Subject Section, under the relevant industry, e.g. "Computers". For stock information, try "Stocks" on Table A. Other sources, outside the Room, include corporate reports and various business literature databases.

Industry Information

Check the Industry Data section on Table B, or in the Alphabetical Subject Section. Also try periodical database indexes, such as E Business Source Complete and Factiva.

International Information

Check one of the country or region sections of the World Data Section. Material here includes directories of firms, statistics, and guides to doing business in countries.
