Borrow, Renew, Return

Learn how to borrow, renew, and return library items, or use our other Research Resources.

Borrow Library Items

Use the SearchWorks library catalog to find items available at Stanford. Most Stanford GSB Library items are available to request for pickup. If an item is available in another location and doesn’t have a request button, you will need to go to that library to locate it and check it out. Faculty and staff can submit a Document Delivery request.

Go to My Library Account to see your checkouts and items you have requested for pickup. You can also renew items and pay fines and fees. See Item Loan Periods.

Request Items for Pickup

Some library items can be requested for pickup at various libraries on campus.

Request Available Items

Available in SearchWorks

Items at some campus libraries, including the GSB library, are available to be requested for pickup. After locating the item in SearchWorks, use the Request button and pay attention to where you can select the pickup location (image at right). You’ll get an email when the items are ready; it may take a few business days.

Request Checked Out Items

Not Available in SearchWorks

In SearchWorks, you can request items that are currently checked out. When you do this, we will try to get the item from another library for you. If we cannot, we will “recall” the item, which means the person who currently has it checked out will need to return it soon, typically within 7 days, so that you can use it.

Tip! Sometimes another campus library has the same item you’re looking for, so check SearchWorks for another copy you can get faster.

Renew Library Items

Most items, except for reserves and equipment, can be renewed, unless they have been requested or recalled by another person. Renewal limits vary by item type and affiliation. You can renew items online (except for reserve items) or contact us for assistance.

Return Library Items

Drop off items in the book return outside of the Bass Center or one of the other locations on campus.
