Highlights this week:
  • Working on my start-up (prepping for a VC meeting and speaking at a conference this weekend)
  • Spending quality time with friends
  • Very intense week for my Touchy-Feely class.
Favorite memories of my first year:
  • The day we talked about Google and Facebook in Strategy class
  • Climbing the Great Wall of China with 40 classmates wearing panda hats
  • Having the flexibility and resources to work on my startup during Spring quarter

Favorite memories of my second year so far:

  • My Touchy-Feely (OB 374) t-group

9:00 AM Woken up by a text message asking me to hang out in SF that day. I have a lot of work to do today (I spent all day yesterday at the WIM retreat and the Homecoming football game tailgate), so I decide to spend some time catching up on work before heading to the City in the afternoon.

11:30 AM Did some laundry, including the absurd costume I wore to the Treasure Island Music Festival the weekend before.

12:00 PM Made some eggs and toast while listening to This American Life podcast.

12:15 PM Did work for my start-up, Bre.ad

1:00 PM Took a shower and watched half an episode of Breaking Bad while getting ready.

1:45 PM Drove to the GSB.

2:00 PM Went to the GSB library to record a video for my start-up.

3:00 PM Ran into my friends Daniel Benavides (MBA2), Megan Zoback (MBA2), and Erin Sprague (MBA2) at Arbuckle and stopped to chat.

3:30 PM Went to CVS and Trader Joes, decided I wasn’t going to have time to go up to the City today.

4:30 PM Read for class on my roof deck.

5:30 PM Did a Google Hangout with one of my friends from college.

6:00 PM Email and work for my start-up (including editing the video and sending it to my team).

7:30 PM Touchy Feely reading.

8:30 PM Friend Sam Cecil (MBA2) comes over for dinner.

9:00 PM Helped my roommate Matt Ivester (MBA2) on PR efforts for his new book, lol...OMG!

10:00 PM Wrote a humor piece and submitted it to McSweeney's Lists, responded to email.

11:00 PM Worked on my column (I write a biweekly tech column for The Daily Muse with frequent syndication in Forbes and The Huffington Post)

12:00 AM Bedtime

8:20 AM Alarm went off, snoozed.

9:00 AM Finally got up, checked email and Twitter on my phone, took a shower. Tried on a million different outfits in preparation for an interview I had later in the day.

9:45 AM Grabbed some snacks, threw in my bag, and ran out the door.

9:55 AM Drove to school, cutting it close for class. So close that I was able to park in a carpool spot (which doesn't technically open until 10:00 AM).

10:00 AM Touchy Feely class in the library.

Class session today was on diversity and identity.

12:00 PM Quick break to grab coffee in Arbuckle.

12:10 PM 50 minutes of t-group.

1:00 PM Grabbed lunch in Arbuckle with my friend Andres Echandi (MBA2).

Andres is Costa Rican, and we ate together to discuss my trip to Costa Rica this December.

1:30 - 3:00 PM Real Life Ethics class. Guest lecturer was the GSB's former Dean Bob Joss. Realized I forgot to bring a notepad or portfolio for my afternoon interview and had to borrow one from a classmate on my way out of class.

3:15 - 3:45 PM Interview in the library. Ran into friends Jason Lee (MBA2) and Scott Bouska (MBA2) before and after. Commiserated, compared notes.

4:00 PM Sat in Arbuckle working on email and a deck for my start-up (I'm speaking at a conference on Saturday).

Casey Owens (MBA1) recognized me from the WIM retreat on Saturday and came up to talk to me for 20 minutes about life at the GSB. Also ran into my friend Katie Hill (MBA2) and chatted.

5:00 PM Did a call with a recruiter from a design consulting firm who found me on LinkedIn.

5:30 PM Took a coffee meeting with a classmate who is working for a start-up. Gave her advice on social media and how to negotiate stock options.

6:00 PM Worked on stuff for my start-up, including my presentation for a conference that weekend.

6:30 PM Ate meat loaf and mashed potatoes at Arbuckle with my classmate Bilige Suode (MBA2) to talk about her experiences in China.

7:00 PM Super intense t-group. I cried. Multiple times.

10:00 PM Ran into my friend Austin Kiessig (MBA2) in the parking lot after t-group. We talked about how we wanted to go to FOAM, but we were too drained from our respective t-groups.

10:30 PM My friend Lauren Chaparro (MBA2) came over and we made cookies.

12:00 AM Did email, finished the deck for my start-up and did a couple run-throughs of my presentation, looked at flights for Christmas, signed up for AME club so I can go on the Sundance trek in January, scheduled some dinners and lunches with classmates.

3:00 AM Bedtime

9:30 AM Wake up, check email and Twitter in bed on my iPhone. No time to shower.

10:00 AM Quickly make a sandwich because I'm running late to drop off my bike for a tune-up.

10:30 AM Eat sandwich in my car while driving to school. My bike is at school (I parked it there over the weekend when I biked to the football game tailgate).

11:00 AM Bike over to the campus bike shop at Tresidder Memorial Union.

Notice that the undergrads had written "Happy Diwali" on the ground in chalk all over that part of campus. I’m reminded that I have a Diwali party to go to on Friday.

11:30 AM Stop by the Wells Fargo at Tresidder Student Union to do some banking.

12:15 PM Walk back to the GSB.

12:20 PM Run into my friend Maya Simon (MBA2). It's her birthday. I give her a hug and tell her I'll see her later tonight for WIM group (she's hosting at her house this week).

12:30 PM Grab a cappuccino at Coupa Café at the GSB.

12:45 PM Lunch meeting with Professor JD Schramm (he runs the Mastery in Communications Initiative at the GSB). We’re both TEDsters and share a love for TED talks. We talked about the Big Ideas Club (which I run) and how we will be partnering with the MCI to do a live stream of the TED conference on campus like we did last year.

1:30 PM Ran into my friend Maria Lambert (MBA2) sitting in the courtyard, and I joined her to talk and do some work on our laptops.

She and I did a roadtrip through Europe this summer and we took a bunch of silly photos of me sitting awkwardly in different locations. Maria is a photographer and brought her nice camera to school that day, so we recreated one of the “sitting” photos in front of Bass Library.

3:00 PM Went home to shower.

4:00 PM WIM group meeting at a pass-down house called The Lemon Drop. Great to see our facilitator Dikla and all my WIM group mates (MBA2s) Bayley Dixon, Ashley Lewis, Theresa Hagel, Becca Levin, Maya Simon, and Katharina Schmitt.

6:00 PM Dinner in the Oberndorf Event Center. It was a celebration dinner for everyone who participated in the Entrepreneurial Summer Program (ESP) through the GSB’s Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. Through that program, the GSB helped to pay my salary this summer so I could work full time on my start-up, Bre.ad. I grabbed some food, voted for best photo of the summer, and then shared a quick recap of what I learned. I had to duck out early to make it to my other dinner obligation, so I didn’t hear who won the photo contest.

7:00 PM Hustled to downtown Palo Alto to Coconuts Carribean restaurant to meet my start-up team.

We were also having a celebration dinner, and my business partner was in town. He surprised the team with Bre.ad hats.

8:00 PM Came back to school and caught up on email in the library.

8:45 PM I was asked by the Talk coaches to bring my tripod to help film Talk12. I went to the MBA Lounge early to set up.

9:00 PM My classmate Adam Nelson (MBA2) gave his talk to a packed lounge of MBA1s and MBA2s. He was introduced by our classmate Mike Weiss (MBA2).

10:00 PM I congratulated Adam afterward and gave him a hug (as is the custom).

10:15 PM My classmate Mike Weiss (MBA2) told me I was a runner-up in the best photo of the summer contest and gave me the prize he was holding for me. He was the grand prize winner with this photo from his summer job at Airbnb.

10:30 PM Went across the street to the Ferguson Lounge in Schwab for a GSB E@t Club kick-off event with my friend Maria Lambert (MBA2). We ate food and hung out until about 11:30.

11:30 PM Went home, hung out with my roommate Matt Ivester (MBA2).

1:00 AM Bedtime

8:00 AM Wake up, check email in bed on my iPhone.

8:30 AM Shower

9:20 AM Make quick breakfast to-go and drive to school.

9:30 AM Grab coffee in Arbuckle.

9:40 AM Frantically skim the reading for my 10:00 AM class.

10:00 AM Strategic Philanthropy class. Did some role play activities, a brainstorming session, and had a guest speaker who is the founder of a family foundation.

1:00 PM Coffee with Jing Chen (MBA1) to offer advice on how to navigate the first year of business school.

2:00 PM Drive up to San Francisco. Called an old friend to catch up.

3:15 PM Met my business partner for a quick huddle before our meeting.

3:30  PM Meeting with a venture capital firm in San Francisco. One of the principals is a former GSB classmate (that's how I made the intro for the meeting). We pitched our company, and it went well.

5:30 PM Happy hour hosted by a friend of a friend at Twitter. Had drinks with a Forbes journalist and tech entrepreneur and caught up with some of my Summit Series friends.

7:00 PM Drove back to Palo Alto. Called my dad and caught up with him.

8:00 PM Birthday BBQ for Maya Simon (MBA2) at a pass-down house called the Lemon Drop. I was starving because I skipped lunch, so I ate several cheeseburgers.

10:00 PM Diwali party at another pass-down house called Casablanca. I arrived with my friends Lauren Chaparro (MBA2) and Nick DeMeuse (MBA2).

11:45 PM Went home to get some sleep. Not looking forward to getting up at 5:00 AM on Saturday, but excited about speaking at a digital media conference.

12:00 AM Bedtime
