Test Results
While we know that scores on standardized tests do not always portray a student’s abilities accurately, they still play a helpful role as one piece of an application.
As such, we require every applicant to submit results of the GMAT. (We will make an exception for alternatives such as the GRE. Contact the MBA Admissions Office for more information).
We consider your test scores within the context of factors such as the resources available to you, the educational procedures within your university and country, etc.
GMAT
- There is no minimum GMAT score for graduate study at Stanford University.
- GMAT scores are valid for five years. The scores must be valid on the deadline date of the round in which you apply. Use the Test Results Calculators to find out if your test scores will be valid (see Related Links).
- Self-report your scores on the Application Form. These are the scores we will consider in our initial evaluation of your application.
- You must instruct Pearson VUE to send your official GMAT scores directly to the Stanford MBA Program school code L9R-KW-09.
For the GRE, you must instruct Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send your official scores directly to the Stanford MBA Program school code 4704. - If you have taken the GMAT more than once, report only the score that you wish us to consider while reviewing your application. We do not average scores. The scores you report must be from the same testing session.
- If you retake the GMAT after the application deadline, we will not consider your new scores in our evaluation.
- If your AWA (Analytical Writing Assessment) score is not available, leave this question blank.
- The GMAT is required for application but we will make exceptions for alternatives such as the GRE. Please contact the MBA Admissions Office for further details.
TOEFL
- The minimum TOEFL score for graduate study at Stanford University is 250 for the computer-based test (CBT), 100 for the internet-based test (iBT), or 600 for the paper-based test (PBT).
- TOEFL scores are valid for two years and must be taken before submitting your application. The scores must be valid on the deadline date of the round in which you apply. If you do not take the TOEFL prior to submission, your incomplete application will be reviewed as is. (See the Related Links box for the Test Results Calculator).
- You must instruct the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send your official TOEFL scores directly to the Stanford MBA Program school code 4704.
- Self-report your scores on the Application Form. These are the scores we will consider in our evaluation of your application.
- If you have taken the TOEFL more than once, please report only the scores that you wish us to consider while reviewing your application. We do not average scores.
- If your test scores are not available by the deadline in which you applied, please enter the date of the test and report test scores as "0."

- If you took the paper-based test, report your Structure/Written Expression score in the Writing section, and you Essay score in the Speaking section.
- All students without the equivalent of an undergraduate or graduate degree from a university at which the primary language of instruction is English must submit results of the TOEFL.
Here are some examples to illustrate when the TOEFL is or is not required:
Xiaogu from China went to Bejing for his undergraduate degree. Since the language of instruction was Chinese, he is required to take the TOEFL.
Ning from China got her undergraduate degree in London and is not required to take the TOFEL because the language of instruction in London was English.
James from the United Kingdom went to Germany for his undergraduate degree and is required to take the TOEFL (even though he is a native English speaker) because the language of instruction at the university was German.
Suki from Japan received her undergraduate degree from an American college where the language of instruction was English and is therefore not required to take the TOEFL.
Fayza from Pakistan who went to school in Islamabad where the language of instruction at her university was English is not required to take the TOEFL.
This example illustrates a situation where you may request a waiver of the TOEFL requirement:
Chin from China went to Bejing for her undergraduate degree but then went to London for a graduate degree. Chin may request a waiver of the TOEFL requirement because the language of instruction at the London university where she earned her graduate degree was English.
To request the TOEFL waiver, use the Additional Information section of the application. You may assume this waiver is approved unless we notify you.
IELTS
- We do not accept the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
