Executive RockerMay, 2003 Business School alumna Lindsay MacDonald Hubbard has a demanding day job as a consultant at McKinsey & Company. On weekends she is often selling CDs after concerts for the folk/pop/rock band Rockwell Church. The 2002 GSB graduate is the wife of rocker and first year MBA student Nathan Church Hubbard who sings and writes songs for a touring duo he formed with Joti Rockwell, a first grade classmate. Through two decades and five albums, Rockwell Church has built a strong fan base on the college circuit. On Valentine's Day eve they performed a concert at the Business School to benefit Challenge for Charity, the inter-business school competition that raises money for Special Olympics. "Welcome to 'View from the Bottom,'" Church Hubbard cracked to a packed Bishop Auditorium, normally the venue for the School's View from the Top series of CEO speakers. Before Business School, Church Hubbard was among the first 10 employees at Telephia, the startup provider of market intelligence for the wireless industry, now 200 employees strong, founded by Tom Frangione, MBA '93, and John Oyler, MBA '96, now an independent consultant. After meetings with business clients by day, Church Hubbard often performed music at night. "I'd rip off my business suit backstagemy 'rock star clothes' underneathand step on stage in time to perform," he says with a laugh. One day soon, his rock star clothes and business suit will merge. "I believe the recording and entertainment industry is ripe for a paradigm shift," he says. "Having an MBA and being an artist will be critical for shaping this new frontier. |
