Preseason Camp for NFL Executives

November, 2003

"We get so segmented. We don't get to look at other areas such as marketing, TV deals, and revenue-sharing," said the football player turned team executive. Martin Mayhew of the Detroit Lions' front office was praising the networking and business acumen he picked up last summer at the Business School's first Executive Education program for the National Football League and the NFL Players Association.

The one-week, custom-designed Program for NFL Managers included executives from all 32 league teams, representatives of the NFL front office, and members of the players association, including active players Troy Vincent, Robert Porcher, and Ryan McNeil. In addition to sessions led by GSB faculty, the group heard from NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, players association executive director Gene Upshaw, and some team presidents and general managers.

The program was codirected by Professor George Foster and Lecturer Bill Walsh—formerly head coach and general manager of the San Francisco 49ers and a former Stanford head football coach. "We had excellent participation among our faculty, the teams, players, and management people," said Walsh of the June 22-28 classes on the Stanford campus.

The program grew out of an expertise in sports management developed for the Stanford MBA Program through the collaboration of Foster and Walsh. Walsh had supported the idea of executive development for years. Gene Washington, NFL director of football operations, visited Stanford as a speaker in one of Foster and Walsh's MBA classes last year. After seeing the content Stanford had developed, he was eager to begin discussions about a custom program. "We wanted to deepen the core business skills of the participants and give them a greater appreciation of all aspects of the NFL, the clubs, and the players association," Foster said.
