Quotable

"Your values only get tested when you're truly in situations where those values can cause sacrifices. If you don't have those values deeply imbedded in you, it's really easy to say, 'I don't want to know about it, but let's get it done.'"

Timothy Ling, MBA '89, chief operating officer of Unocal, giving advice to MBA students during a September View from the Top speech.

For more of Ling's views on leadership, please see www.gsb.stanford.edu/news/headlines/vftt_ling.shtml and www.gsb.stanford.edu/news/profiles/ling.shtml.

Editor: Tim Ling died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Jan. 28, at age 46. Tim was a member of the School's Management Board and co-chaired the committee for his 15th class reunion.
