| February 2004 School Launches Undergrad InstituteIt's a first: The Business School will offer a summer institute for undergraduate students this year. The goal is to give a selected group of young people a solid foundation in core business and general management disciplines, says human resources management professor and economist Ed Lazear, who will codirect the program with economist Kathryn Shaw. Designed for college juniors, seniors, and recent graduates with majors in liberal arts and sciences who want to build their resumes and secure jobs, the Stanford Graduate School of Business Summer Institute will run June 20-July 16. It will aim to help students succeed in a competitive job market and give them a comprehensive idea of the MBA curriculum at a prestigious university. The GSB's world-class faculty will teach in the four-week, $8,000 residential program, which offers introductory general management sessions in accounting, finance, statistics, human resource management, and organizational behavior. There will be team projects, small-group discussions, guest speakers, and company visits, as well as seminars on leadership, negotiation skills, and political economy. Students also will participate in career planning and management communication workshops. Dean Robert Joss often has characterized management as a noble calling. The summer institute is one way to educate students about the content of a management education while they are still forming ideas about whether they will go into law, medicine, business, or other fields. Applications are due April 1. Know someone who would like to apply? Refer them to www.gsb.stanford.edu/exed/si. |
