With this issue we introduce a new ClassNotes editor, Christa Amsden. She has
joined Gale Sperry, who is tip-toeing toward retirement. Gale began working with
class secretaries in 1983, at a time when there were fewer than 10 pages of
ClassNotes per issue. As the School grew more venerable and more of you had more
things to talk about, the job of preparing the ClassNotes section grew more
complex. We talk about shepherding the project, but frankly, it's a bit like
herding cats. With empathy for Christa, Gale has offered to stay on to aid her
transition. I overheard Gale the other day, for instance, imparting to Christa
(with a clearing of her throat) that a statistically improbable number of class
secretaries have owned pets who ate their columns just before deadline.
Christa is not exactly wet behind the ears, however. Married to a Stanford
MBA, she already has read a fair number of your notes, so don't expect her to
believe all those golf and tennis scores. Having worked nearly three years in
the School's Alumni Relations office, she already has communicated with a number
of you about other alumni services, and in a past life, she supervised
sophisticated customer support systems in high-tech companies. The School can't
always afford the latest, greatest automated customer support, but staff members
like Gale Sperry and Christa Amsden work hard at applying skills learned in the
for-profit sector toward better service to you and to current students. We will
have a more formal farewell to Gale sometime next year, but for now we look
forward to Christa's involvement in producing this magazine and trust you will
too.
