Dave Haynie, MBA class of ’08, shown here, got a chance to hone his leadership skills by conducting the St. Lawrence String Quartet in the fall quarter. In just an hour’s session, world-renowned conductor Rob Kapilow taught those without any musical experience how to observe the professional musicians’ communication with each other and then how to lead them. When one novice had difficulty on his first try, the student quipped, “We need a retreat,” to which Kapilow countered with “a luau on Friday night.”
Conductors and musicians take turns leading, watching heads nod and eyeballs dart or lock to keep in sync, Kapilow said, but most important is listening, especially to the silences, a task the students did not do well on their first tries.
