Denning Honored with Leadership Award
The Business School honored Steven Denning, MBA ’78, with its 2007 Excellence in Leadership Award at a dinner in New York’s Rainbow Room in April. “This award recognizes the achievements of an alumnus who has exhibited the integrity and leadership ability that we hope all our students will demonstrate throughout their careers,” said School Dean Robert Joss.
Denning has been with General Atlantic, a global private equity firm, since 1980 and is now its chairman. He and his management team have helped shape the future of more than 160 companies. “Steve brings a passion to his professional, personal, and service life,” said Joss. “He takes a stand and pulls people along with him.”
Denning also is chairman of the Business School’s Advisory Council and co-chair of the University’s $4.3 billion fundraising effort. He serves on many boards, including that of the School of Economics and Management at Beijing’s Tsinghua University. He also is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
“At Stanford, Steve appreciated early the changes coming in global business,” Joss said to 400 alumni and other guests who attended the dinner, the largest GSB gathering recorded in New York. “He has exerted tremendous leadership to encourage the School to innovate in the global dimension.”
Denning’s wife, Roberta Bowman Denning, MBA ’78, has been an active partner in their philanthropy, particularly in the development and support of the arts.
