Is Often Hard”

January 2007

STANFORD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS —STANFORD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS —Being a corporate leader is often “brutally hard,” admits Paul Idzik, chief operating officer at international financial services firm Barclays PLC.

At a recent Global Speakers Series, sponsored by the Center for Global Business and the Economy, Idzik talked about the challenges of being a manager. He outlined the choices Barclays’ managers faced to stay competitive. One of the largest financial services firms in the world, Barclays is engaged in retail and commercial banking, credit cards, investment banking, wealth management, and investment management services worldwide.

Idzik, who has an MBA from the University of Chicago, was named chief operating officer of Barclays PLC in 2004. He was formerly chief operating officer of Barclays Capital from 1999 to 2004. Idzik worked as a consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton from 1985 to 1999.
