Stanford Business School Offers DVD on Disaster Relief Management

January 11, 2006

STANFORD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS—The Stanford Graduate School of Business has produced a DVD of edited highlights from its 2005 Effective Disruption Management conference. The DVD is now available free of charge to humanitarian relief organizations and other nonprofit agencies.

The conference, sponsored by the Center for Social Innovation at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, the Stanford Global Supply Chain Management Forum, Fritz Institute, and MIT, was held in September at the Business School in response to a number of high-profile disasters in the world.

The DVD captures members of humanitarian relief organizations, along with corporate and academic supply chain management experts, exchanging ideas and best practices aimed at improving the effectiveness of major international disaster efforts.

"We are pleased to be able to make important information from the conference more accessible through the availability of this DVD," said Kriss Deiglmeier, executive director of the Center for Social Innovation. "This is the beginning of a larger effort to make valuable information from selected seminars and conferences sponsored by the Center available to the public and those actively engaged in social innovation throughout the world." The Center for Social Innovation builds and strengthens the capacity of individuals and organizations to develop innovative solutions to social problems for a more just, sustainable, and healthy world. "Our approach is to promote the mutual exchange of ideas and values across disciplines as well as across the public, nonprofit, and private sector," said Deiglmeier.

The Humanitarian Relief Logistics Best Practices Toolkit DVD covers the importance of agility, proactive planning, partnerships, local capacity building, and performance management. Speakers include representatives from Fritz Institute, Cisco, Stanford Global Supply Chain Management Forum, Mercy Corps USA, General Motors, CARE Canada, International Rescue Committee, and TNT N.V. (Amsterdam).

Edited conference excerpts on the DVD include:

  • The State of Risk Management
  • Risk Assessment and Planning: Procedures and Benefits
  • Efficient Disaster Response
  • Risk Action Plans for Supply Chain and Manufacturing
