2006 Nobel Peace Prize Recipient Yunus Describes His Work
October 2006
STANFORD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS—2006 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus, an economist who founded Grameen Bank of Bangladesh, was a participant in the Global Poverty Conference sponsored by the Business School's Center for Global Business and the Economy.
At the 2004 conference Yunus described the work of Grameen Bank, a pioneer in micro lending that makes money available to those living in extreme poverty, especially women, so that they can launch their own businesses. "It's a great honor for us and for Bangladesh," Yunus told the BBC on Oct. 13 as the prize was announced. "It's a recognition of our work. As a Bangladeshi, I'm proud that we have given something to the world. Our work has now been recognized by the whole world."
