Each candidate must pass a University oral examination. In this examination, the candidate presents his or her progress in dissertation research and plans regarding what remains to be done. The examination committee is composed of field faculty and non-field faculty as well as a University chairperson.
The oral examination is scheduled when the dissertation advisor believes that the dissertation is one-half to two-thirds complete. By that time, the examination committee has a reasonable basis for judging the feasibility and significance of the proposed research as well as the candidate's preparation.
