Across the University

There is a strong commitment across Stanford University to research and education focused on improving health and healthcare around the world. Students who come to the GSB find many different ways to enhance their learning experiences by interfacing with other schools and centers focused on this important pursuit. A handful of the most prominent entities are listed below.

Center for Innovation in Global Health
Stanford University's global health programs within the Center for Innovation in Global Health are dedicated to understanding and reducing health disparities and strengthening human capital both in our local communities and worldwide. By engaging Stanford's multidisciplinary strengths in innovative technology design, integrative patient and population research, and education, the Center strives to create an ethos of service for low resource communities.

Clinical Excellence Research Center
Better Health, Less Spending:  The Clinical Excellence Research Center organizes research teams from multiple Stanford Schools to design and test new methods of health care delivery that substantially reduce population-wide disability and annual per capita health spending in the near term. Research is led by teams of post-doctoral research fellows and mentored by faculty from multiple Stanford Schools with initial emphasis on Business, Engineering and Medicine.

SPARK Drug & Diagnostic Discovery Program
SPARK supports faculty and fellows in the process of discovering, refining, and testing potential new pharmaceutical-based therapies, products, and tools. SPARK is designed to identify partnerships between academia and enterprise to allow these discoveries to move from Stanford's laboratories to pragmatic applications for human health.

Stanford Biodesign
Stanford Biodesign’s mission is to train students, fellows, and faculty in the Biodesign Process: a systematic approach to needs finding and the invention and implementation of new biomedical technologies.  Key components of the program include Biodesign Innovation Fellowships; classes in medtech innovation; mentoring of students and faculty in the technology transfer process; career services for students interested in medtech careers; and community educational events.

Stanford Health Policy
Stanford Health Policy is the joint working name of the Center for Health Policy (CHP) and the Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research (PCOR). It conducts rigorous research that lays the foundation for better domestic and international health policy and health care. Drawing upon its multidisciplinary research, Stanford Health Policy offers innovative educational programs from the undergraduate to the graduate level.

At the GSB

There are also other centers at the GSB that can provide valuable support and help facilitate exciting experiences for students interested in health.

Center for Entrepreneurial Studies
The CES focuses on case development, research, curriculum development, and student and alumni programs in the areas of entrepreneurship and funding of early stage companies, including venture capital. The center has assisted dozens of students as they have prepared to launch health-related start-ups.

Center for Global Business and the Economy
The CGBE is focused on educating the world’s future business leaders about the challenges and opportunities of a global economy. The center accomplishes this by providing firsthand global experiences to students, global business courses, research, and conferences, seminars, and speaking events. Given its importance in the global economy, health and healthcare are central topics in all of these core activities.

Center for Social Innovation
CSI’s mission is to cultivate leaders who can solve the world’s toughest social and environmental problems. It seeks to raise awareness, build skills, and advance action through research, education, and collaboration with a network of partners from nonprofits, businesses, and government. Health is a key focus for the center.

Public Management Program
As part of the CSI, the Public Management Program (PMP) prepares and challenges Stanford GSB students to address problems affecting society by applying their management education in ways that create social, environmental, and economic value. The certificate program provides students the opportunity to focus their educational efforts in domain areas such as healthcare, as well as the environment, international development, and education. They can also shape their academic efforts in approaches to social impact such as corporate social responsibility, social entrepreneurship, nonprofit management, or government.
