Independent Study
Pursuing Social Innovation
Even with the great breadth of PMP elective courses offered, many students take advantage of the option to pursue specific topics in social innovation by creating an independent study course. Successful independent study courses have included in-depth examinations of a particular social sector issue, evaluations of current events, assessments of specific organizations' best practices, and more. Often, students complete projects as a part or focus of an independent study. Projects may take the form of part-time internships, hands-on consulting work, strategic planning, the creation of evaluative metrics, and more.
Posting
and Viewing Projects
- Recruiters wishing to post a project should login to the Recruiter Dashboard above, select "Add a new job" in the Alumni/Student Job Postings section, and follow the directions given.
- Students wishing to review a project should login to the CMC section of MyGSB and enter My Career Dashboard, select the link named "Job Board," and set the filter at the bottom of the left column to include "Experiential Projects.
Credits Earned
Students usually earn between one and four units through an independent study. The number of units earned is relative to the number of hours a student is expected to spend completing a project; typically, a total of 30 hours is required for each single unit of academic credit earned. Current students should see the GSB Registrar for details on procedure and timeline.
