SMIF for Students:
A Summer Experience with Impact
Use your business skills for the common good as a SMIF Fellow. From strategy to business planning to marketing, your SMIF fellowship will help you develop critical business skills while directing those skills toward your passion, or to a topic new to you. Prepare for future leadership with SMIF.
The SMIF Experience Integrates Learning and Teaching
- Valuable learning opportunities: Use your MBA skills in a challenging internship, completing a project of critical importance to your summer employer.
- Mentorship: Learn from social sector leaders, who serve as mentors during your experience.
- Sharing with the GSB community: Translate your summer experience into a broader lesson for the GSB community, many of them donors to SMIF, by educating your peers, faculty, and staff about your fellowship. After returning to the GSB, Fellows write articles for GSB publications, participate in panel discussions about summer employment opportunities, and help recognize program donors.
- Become part of the SMIF community: Join the growing community of SMIF alumni now using their MBA skills for positive social impact.
Fellowship Guidelines and Student Eligibility
- SMIF fellowships take place with eligible organizations (see Guide for SMIF Employers
) for at least 10 weeks, and up to 12 weeks, during the summer between your first and second year of the MBA program. - Students who are graduating from the GSB before their summer internship are not eligible for SMIF fellowships.
- Students who are completing dual or joint degrees and will not return to the GSB immediately after their SMIF fellowship are not eligible.
How the Fund Works
Thanks to the Stanford Management Internship Fund, Fellows earn a total salary commensurate with internships held by their peers in the private sector through a combination of SMIF and the employer’s contribution. Employers can contribute through salary or in-kind support, such as housing or transportation.
