Brazil Service Learning Trip, Spring 2006

The students on the Brazil trip spent Spring Break in Rio, Porto Alegre and Salvador where they helped social entrepreneurs address issues as varied as rural development, clean energy, and computer literacy. Each visit included live "case discussions" with the organization's founder about his vision and strategy for creating social change.

Hands-on Service

In addition, students helped the organizations through hands-on service activities such as helping collect and bundle sisal at a farmer's association in Bahia and organizing a computer donation campaign with Stanford alumni in Brazil. These computers were donated to the CDI computer literacy schools in Rio de Janerio. Students had the opportunity to see "social enterprise" in multiple forms and gain a greater understanding of the benefits and drawbacks of each.
