New Orleans Service Learning Trip, Spring 2006
This year's trip to New Orleans came to fruition in response to specific student and donor interest in the area recently devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Over Spring Break, a team of GSB students traveled to New Orleans to help with Katrina recovery efforts.
Responding with Direct Service
Students learned about the social, economic, environmental, and cultural effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans. The majority of the trip was spent in direct service through our partner nonprofit working in the neighborhoods most devastated by the Hurricane. In addition, the team met with local relief organizations, business leaders and government officials to better understand what steps are being taken to rebuild New Orleans and to prevent similar crises from happening in the future, as well as what long-term effects this will have on the socio-demographic character of the city.
