Why were you interested in participating in the SIE?

Spending my graduate career in Silicon Valley, I realized how prevalent business is in science.  I thought at the very least, I should understand the different arms of a business, so that I would be able to interact more effectively with people from biotech or pharma.  I felt as though the SIE would be a great platform to get that exposure.  Upon getting that exposure, I hoped that I would be able to think more deeply about whether a career in business would be one where I would thrive.

Were your expectations for the program met?

My expectations were surpassed.  I not only got exposure to many areas of business, but I also realized that I am interested in many facets of business.  SIE has inspired me to continue learning about the fields to which I was introduced.

What are you doing now?

I have returned to the lab, where I still have 1.5-2 years worth of work ahead of me.  I have talked with my advisor about my interests and have subsequently had several meetings with execs and partners from different biotech companies and law firms, respectively.   I plan on using my experience in SIE as well as these contacts to help me obtain an internship at a company.

How will your experience in the SIE help you in future endeavors?

The biggest thing that SIE did for me was to introduce me to what business really is and what makes a great entrepreneur.  This has been and will continue to be an inspiration as I continue my career.

In your opinion, what was the most valuable aspect of the SIE?

The group project: it taught me a lot about what sort of things people really do when they are trying to evaluate the market space for a new company.  The guest speakers in sum also did a great job at conveying the true entrepreneurial spirit.  It’s one thing to be told, “Do what you love.”  However, when you here one story after another about how people turned their passion into a business (as opposed to trying to find the next “pet rock”), the point really starts to come across.
