Admissions
Who can apply for the SIGM program?
Applicants must have completed at least three years of undergraduate studies in a non-business field (e.g. engineering, liberal arts, sciences). Recent graduates and graduate students may attend the program as long as they are within two years of completing their undergraduate degree at the time of admission.
What do I need to submit to apply to the SIGM program? All applicants must submit the following:
- Online application, including a short essays and resume.
- Two recommendation letters. One letter must come from a professor who has taught you during your collegiate career. The other may come from a person who can act as a reference: a professor, an employer or supervisor, an academic administrator, a mentor, etc.
- An official transcript from each college and/or university you have attended, regardless of the number of credits received. Official records are original documents issued by the institution that bear its official stamp as well as the signature of the appropriate official. If transcripts do not show a 4.0 grade scale equivalency, an assessment scale must be submitted as well.
When is the application deadline?
The application deadline is March 9, 2010. The application deadline for PepsiCo Foundation scholarship applicants is February 8, 2010. All application materials must be received by the appropriate deadline for the application to be considered. Admissions will be made on a rolling basis and all applicants are urged to complete and submit their applications as early as possible.
What are the admission criteria for the SIGM program?
Admission decisions are made by carefully reviewing each applicant’s recent academic performance and overall record of accomplishments. We're looking for outstanding individuals, full of curiosity and a passion for engaging the curriculum and each other. SIGM participants display a genuine interest in expanding their intellectual horizons and seek out opportunities to challenge their beliefs and perspectives. We also seek participants who demonstrate competence and integrity in facing obstacles, who are naturally looked to by their peers for leadership. When reading your essays and recommendations, we begin forming a picture of who you are—your values, your goals, and what motivates you in life.
However, evaluating your applicant file is only the first step in the review. The next step is a comparative process, deciding which of the highly qualified candidates to admit. This process definitely is more of an art than a science.
What is the minimum GPA to be considered for the program?
The average 2009 SIGM participant's GPA was approximately 3.5 on a 5-point scale.
Do I need to take the GMAT to attend SIGM?
No, GMAT scores are not required.
Do I have to apply online?
Yes. The program and financial aid applications are only available online.
Can I apply without paying the application fee?
Although we understand the financial burden that applicants may be under and sympathize with your circumstances, we are not able to waive the application fee.
How can I ensure that my application materials arrive prior to the deadline?
Please ask your references to email their recommendations to SIGMAppMaterials@gsb.stanford.edu. Additionally, you may email a PDF of your unofficial transcript to review as we wait for your official one to arrive.
