Policies
We strive to provide the best possible experience for our applicants while being fair and consistent in our policies.
- If materials are sent to the SIGM admissions office late or are not included in your supplemental materials package, you should expect that they will not be reviewed.
- You may submit only one application per admission year.
- The SIGM admissions office reserves the right to verify that information and documents submitted as part of your application are complete and accurate.
- If you are offered admission, Stanford reserves the right to withdraw that offer if you show a significant drop in academic performance, fail to graduate or have misrepresented yourself in the application process. We also may withdraw admission if we learn that you have engaged in behavior prior to matriculation that indicates a serious lack of judgment or integrity, or if you have committed to enroll in the class of an institution other than Stanford. Stanford further reserves the right to require you to provide additional information and/or authorization for the release of information about any such matter.
- All applications must be completed and submitted online.
- Application materials and all supporting documents become the confidential property of the Summer Institute for General Management Admissions Office and cannot be returned to you.
- Regrettably, we are unable to provide feedback to denied applicants. All admission decisions are final.
Admission Criteria
Applicants must have completed at least three years of undergraduate studies in a non-business field (e.g. engineering, liberal arts, sciences). Recent graduates and graduate students may attend the program as long as they are within two years of completing their undergraduate degree at the time of admission.
The program assumes no previous coursework in business-related subjects. The following criteria are used to evaluate applicants:
- Academic performance
- Rigor of academic curriculum
- Overall record of accomplishment in volunteer activities, student or community organizations, work or internship experience, and leadership experience
Please note: Applicants who have graduated more than three years prior to the program will not be considered for admission.
Application Materials
All applicants must submit the following:
- Online application, including a short essays and resume.
- Two recommendation letters. One letter must come from a professor who has taught you during your collegiate career. The other may come from a person who can act as a reference: a professor, an employer or supervisor, an academic administrator, a mentor, etc.
- An official transcript from each college and/or university you have attended, regardless of the number of credits received. Official records are original documents issued by the institution that bear its official stamp as well as the signature of the appropriate official. If transcripts do not show a 4.0 grade scale equivalency, an assessment scale must be submitted as well.
International students:
In addition to the standard criteria, international applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency. This may be demonstrated in any one of the following ways:
• TOEFL scores dated within the past 24 months. The minimum TOEFL score for consideration is:
- 250 for the computer-based test (CBT)
- 100 for the internet-based test (iBT)
- 600 for the paper-based test (PBT)
You must instruct the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send your official TOEFL scores directly to the Stanford GSB Summer Institute for General Management (school code 3493).
- IELTS scores dated within the past 24 months. The minimum IELTS overall band score for study at the Stanford Graduate School of Business is 7.0
- An undergraduate degree from an American college or university.
- A letter from your current college or university confirming that that English is the primary language of instruction.
If You Are Admitted
Applicants must submit a written acceptance within 1 week of admission to confirm their intent to attend. To secure a place in the program, payment is due upon admission. Admitted applicants may apply for a loan within five days of their admission. Applicants applying for a scholarship, financial assistance, or the CitiBank loan will be granted a grace period until their aid status is confirmed.
